Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark delivered an outstanding performance on Friday night, matching the WNBA rookie record for 3-pointers in a game by sinking seven shots and scoring a game-high 30 points in the team's 85-83 victory over the Mystics in Washington.
Clark's impressive 7-of-13 shooting from beyond the arc and 8-of-15 overall helped her tie her season-high scoring from May 28 against Los Angeles for Indiana (3-9). Additionally, she contributed significantly with 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals, despite encountering 8 turnovers.
Reflecting on her performance, Clark expressed her satisfaction with her shooting, stating, "It felt good to shoot the ball well. I felt like even my misses were right there. It was nice to have a night like that, and overall we shot the ball well, 16 made 3s."
Clark confessed that despite initially missing her first two attempts, she managed to keep her composure and attributed her success to her teammates' exceptional screens. "As a shooter, once you see one or two go in, the basket just looks bigger and bigger," she added.
Indiana Fever player Teaira McCowan tied Crystal Robinson's rookie record by sinking seven 3-pointers. It's worth noting that Robinson set this impressive record back in 1999 during her time with the New York Liberty. However, Robinson's professional experience was not that of a typical rookie as she had already played two seasons with the Colorado Xplosion in the short-lived American Basketball League. Currently, Robinson serves as an assistant coach with the Chicago Sky.
McCowan's exceptional shooting prowess was evident during the recent game. According to Second Spectrum, her average shot distance against the Mystics was an impressive 24 feet, marking the longest shot distance by any player this season. Notably, eleven of her successful 3-pointers were from a distance of at least 25 feet. She has managed to achieve the feat of making at least seven shots from 25 feet in a total of eight games this season, a feat matched only by New York's Sabrina Ionescu.
In addition to this remarkable performance, McCowan also secured a notable achievement by becoming the fastest WNBA player to reach 200 points and 75 assists in just 12 games. This record was previously held by Seattle's Sue Bird, who accomplished it in 14 games back in 2002. Throughout the season, McCowan has consistently led or co-led the Fever in assists in every game, further solidifying her impact on the court.
The Washington Mystics, with a record of 0-11, had games on both Thursday and Friday at Capital One Arena. The attendance was 10,000 on the first night and 20,333 on the second night. Previously, they used to play in that arena full-time but relocated to the smaller Entertainment and Sports Arena, which has a capacity of 4,200, in 2019. The presence of rookies Angel Reese and Clark led to the decision to move these games to the larger venue.
"It's great to see the big crowds," said Clark. "It's fun to see people in Fever gear and the excitement about women's basketball."
After playing 11 games in 20 days to start the season, the Fever expressed the need for rest. They were able to get some rest this past week, which helped them bounce back from a tough loss. Clark acknowledged the challenges of the league, stating, "I knew what I was getting into. Maybe some people didn't know the circumstances of the WNBA. But me, personally, I know it's one of the best leagues in the world, the players are really good."
"It's a new chapter, a new part of your career becoming a professional athlete. Not everything's going to click overnight. Keep working and keep grinding, and it will come over time," Clark added.
